Does Water Belong in Skincare?

Most things are made of water, including us. Water can be used in skincare as a base, as a solvent and to emulsify. Paying for water in our skincare seems crazy! But is there a better option? Here we discuss taking water out of skin products and replacing it with plant hydrosols.

WHAT ARE HYDROSOLS?

To extract essential oils from plants, plants undergo a steam distillation process. Whilst they are cooling the oil component separates from the water. This process results in 2 things, the first is the essential oil and the second is the hydrosol, which is the plant water. The aromatics and plant properties have passed tough the water so the remaining water (hydrosol) is enriched with a mix of beneficial plant extracts. They are used in cosmetics, and to enhance the flavour in food and drinks.

Hydrosols are estimated to be 30 times more potent than a herbal tea, and gentler than essential oils. Hydrosols are good for the skin they can be moisturizing, toning or soothing.

HOW DO I USE THEM?

  • Spray it on your face for uplifting.
  • Spray it on your face to set make up.
  • Use it as a toner after cleaning.
  • Spray it on your body before moisturizing to add nutrients and help absorption of your moisturiser.

IT’S A TONER RIGHT?

Yes it can be used as a toner, and it can also be used by spraying it directly on dehydrated skin to help calm the skin. It can be used as a setting spray for make up. Some people even use it as a pillow spray to help relax the body and mind for sleep.
