Average Cost of Homes in Birmingham

Birmingham, Alabama, is a vast and very interesting city that can’t be boiled down to any one idea or neighborhood.  Although there is an average cost of the town as a whole, the city is more than that.

Five Points South

This neighborhood is where the University of Birmingham calls home and is popular for being a college and education area.  The housing here is moderately expensive, and there are tons of wonderful things to do and see while you’re in the area.  With the average home selling at around $300,000, this type of housing is within reach and has many perks that come with it.

East Birmingham

Located on the eastern end of the Birmingham-Hoover Metro, this neighborhood is known for incredible zoos, museums, and aquariums anyone can visit.  These are even more awesome when you live within walking distance! Unfortunately, the average home in East Birmingham sells for around $250,000 and is in a hot market, with homes not staying up for sale for long.

Ensley

This is one of the most affordable neighborhoods in Birmingham.  Although Ensley has a mixed bag with a higher crime rate and lower housing options until recently: in 2021, a more affordable housing action was passed to allow for more affordable homes to be built and available within this neighborhood.  The average price of a home in Ensley is around $60,000 but may need extensive repairs.

Acipco-Finley

Rated as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Birmingham, this is a quickly aging area of the city, with quiet streets and older businesses.  Although this might not have the nightlife some people seek out, this area can be a great choice for anyone starting a family.  The typical cost of homes in Acipco-Finley is $54,000, which is extraordinarily affordable.

Avondale

Avondale is a wonderful neighborhood that’s quickly growing. Unfortunately, the cost of real estate in this area of the city is skyrocketing every year, with the most recent numbers saying it’s valued at $265,000 for the average home.  Although these prices are rising, they could even out soon: a lot of the fluctuation in prices is due to the housing market going out of control at the moment due to the major buyers’ market that we’re in.

The City Overall

Birmingham is a diverse and incredible city that embraces the change necessary to move forward from its past.  Although every neighborhood in this area is different, and each will sell for outstanding amounts, you won’t get sick of the beautiful views available over the entire city.

The average Birmingham homes for sale go for around $310,000.  This is pretty expensive, but as we’ve seen through its various neighborhoods: there’s a home here for someone on any budget.

There’s a lot for anyone in the Birmingham area! So whether you want a new home in an up-and-coming area, or you’re more interested in something that feels low-key is at a lower price point: you can find what you want in Birmingham.
