Everyone is talking about clarity enhanced diamonds as the affordable choice for people who won’t settle for anything but the rock. But first, a brief introduction
Before we weigh the pros and cons, we must understand what these diamonds are all about. Basically, there are four criteria to evaluate a diamond’s quality (and, accordingly, the price): Color, cut, carat and clarity. We’re focusing on clarity here – the less inclusions and blemishes a diamond naturally has, the better it is. This is graded on a scale from flawless (meaning completely clear) to included.
We must note, though, that these inclusions and blemishes are not man-made – they are not in any way some sort of harm made to the diamond while producing it. They are simply materials which got caught inside the diamond as it was naturally forming. Hence, the solution is the removal of these materials. Recent technology enables us to do just that – it’s called ‘laser cleansing’. Basically, a microscopic hole is drilled in order to make the diamond clearer.
The pros
This method makes your diamond look more sparking, but the price does not soar accordingly. Since the diamond is still considered lower on the clarity scale, it is priced as such – maybe a bit higher. This is ideal for people on a tighter budget, such as young, engaged couples. Another bonus is that this technique does not in any way alter the structure of the rock, and therefore there is no fear of the diamond losing its characteristics. Add to that the fact that the naked eye cannot tell that a diamond has been clarity enhanced. Professionals, with the right kind of magnifying tools, can though. That means you should not hide this fact from the person you are giving the diamond to, since the truth is bound to be discovered sooner or later.
The cons
There’s one big downside to these diamonds, and it’s that this market can sometimes be a door left open for crooks and scammers. We’ve been getting reports about all kinds of shaky salespeople offering fake rocks under the title of ‘clarity enhanced diamonds’. These can easily be avoided by purchasing only from trustworthy sources like Best Brilliance and other online jewelry stores. You can read reviews about your chosen retailer and Googling their name to check their history can do no harm as well. Also, if something seems suspicious to you, there’s a reason. Go with your instincts.
